Mac J Kamwana was born at Kamwana, Dowa 26 June 1935 and went to Kongwe Secondary School.
He joined Nyasaland Police and went to Police Training School in 1953.
He became a tutor at the Police Training School from 1957 to 1962.
He served in several districts from 1963 to 1967 when he returned back to the Police Training School.
In 1967 Mac J Kamwana was promoted to the rank of a Superintendent and was appointed deputy Commandant of the College.
In 1968, Mac Kamwana was sent to the renowned Police Training College in Scotland the only of its kind in the whole of UK at Tuiliallan to pursue an advanced course in Police Management.
After his return he became the first Malawian to be in charge of the Police Training School in Malawi.
In 1969, Mac J Kamwana was promoted to the rank of Senior Superintendent and moved to the Southern Division as second in charge.
In 1970 he was promoted to the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police, administration and was sent to UK to pursue a further Command Course.
In 1971 he was promoted to Deputy Commissioner of Police.
In 1973 he became the first Malawian to be the Commissioner of Police and head.
In 1983 Mac J Kamwana was involved the the infamous Mwanza murders as he controlled all the arms of the Police which were involved in brutal killings of the ministers.
Kamwana retired at the same period and died in 1984.
10 years later, in 1993,the Mwanza case surfaced as a campaign tool for one of the Political parties in Nyasaland.
The incumbent Inspector General of Police then Mac Lunguzi is said to have destroyed in 1993, the vehicle, blue Peugeot belonging to the late Matenje which was involved in the Mwanza Accident.
The vehicle was parked at Chileka Police for 10 years since the infamous accident.
In 1995 Mac Kamwana and 5 others were implicated in the Mwanza Case which followed a gruesome Mtegha Report that caused mayhem on its release in Nyasaland.
Mac Lunguzi was also charged in the same case with interference to destroy evidence.
