Dunduzu Chisiza’s election to parliament, his party position of Secretary General and his post of Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance placed his life on two parallel tracks, danger and success.
As Nyasaland went to the polls of August 1961, Henry Masauko Chipembere was serving a prison sentence for sedition at the Zomba Prison together with the other three, Musopole, Chapinga and Kaponda.
In Parliament, in his maiden speech as Member, Dunduzu Chisiza spoke strongly demanding the release of Chipembere and others citing the charges as insubstantial.
He was right away ruled out of order by the Speaker of Parliament as this was considered an attack and faulting of the Nyasaland judicial system. Not only this,it was also understood as undermining the powers of the office of the Governor and Leader of Majority in the Parliament, Kamuzu himself.
Kamuzu showed no emotion in the house but he was embittered with Dunduzu and his speech. The MCP inner circle leaked information that Kamuzu strongly reprimanded Dunduzu Chisiza.
The first major confrontation between the two had shown itself.
With a brilliant background in Economics, Dunduzu thought ahead of the geographical location of Southern Rhodesia(now Zambia), Tanganyika(now Tanzania) and Nyasaland in relation to their economies.
He felt the three countries should amalgamate in an economic bloc. This was to be an economic federation. It meant involving the leading nationalists of the three-member territories, Kenneth Kaunda of Southern Rhodesia(now Zambia) and Julius Nyerere of Tanganyika(now Tanzania).
When Dunduzu Chisiza presented this plan to Kamuzu,a heated argument ensued between the two. Kamuzu argued in a frenzy but Dunduzu was unmoved. Dunduzu brought in strong points which Kamuzu found hard to encounter but still rejected the plan. Dunduzu was falling in disfavor with the leader. The fault lines were drawn.
