A VETERAN LESOMA CADRE WHO WAS ALSO A DISTRICT COMMISSIONER FOR CHITIPA LAID TO REST IN KARONGA

HUMPHREY GONDWE left Malawi with his twin brother Maxwell Mandere to stay with an elder brother in Zambia in 1974. The twinkle brothers studied in Zambia from Grade 7 (Primary School) up to Form 5 (Secondary school).

It was while in Zambia that they both joined the opposition political party during one party state called the Socialist League of Malawi (LESOMA) led by Dr. Attati Mpakati.


During burial of Humphrey Gondwe on 19th June 2020 in Karonga.

In 1985, Humphrey Gondwe went to Bulgaria for further education through LESOMA scholarships. This cohort of LESOMA scholarship recipients to Bulgaria comprised of late John Phiri, Clifford Msiska, late Charles Nyirenda, Mwenifumbo etc . In 1986, through another LESOMA scholarship, he went to USSR to study Economics up to Masters degree.

He came back from Moscow in 1992. He returned to Malawi in late 1993 after the wind of political change blew over Malawi for which he committed his life when he joined LESOMA.

He worked as Director of Planning in the districts of Likoma, Phalombe, Mulanje and Mzimba, Acting District Commissioner (DC) in Mwanza and finally DC for Chitipa.

He has was laid to rest on 19th June 2020 in Karonga.
